Kai Trump recently took to social media to celebrate a new partnership, but not everyone was happy for her. The 19-year-old recent high school grad has committed to compete on the University of Miami’s collegiate golf team. She also played golf in high school and has competed in junior and amateur events in Florida. So, the fact that she recently landed a golf-related sponsorship has critics convinced that her family name is doing the heavy lifting.
Previously, Kai seemed upset that people were judging her because her last name is Trump, and her grandfather, President Donald Trump, is obviously extremely controversial. While some people could see her point because she’s still young and is also not her grandpa, others argued that she’s clearly benefiting from being a member of the Trump family. They see the new golf partnership as further proof of that.
So, when she announced the new partnership, she received a lot of negative comments.
Some commenters really did congratulate her and say the opportunity was well-deserved. But many others complained that she’s a nepo baby who has landed more opportunities just because she’s a Trump.
In a promotional video for The Net Return, Kai says, “This is how I train when nobody’s watching. If you want better golf, start here. Swing like me, train like me. I’m Kai Trump, official Net Return athlete.”
In her Instagram post about the partnership, she wrote, “Excited to join The Net Return team! Women’s golf is reaching new heights, and I’m proud to partner with a brand that’s helping grow the game by making practice more accessible, enjoyable, and inspiring for players of all ages. Looking forward to taking my training to the next level. Big things to come.”
People accused her of being a grifter.
In the comments, someone noted that Kai comes from “a family of fraudsters and grifters.” Another person claimed that Kai is actually “horrible” at golf and clearly just landed the opportunity because of her grandpa.
To some of the critics, the partnership actually seemed “laughable” and pathetic.” Sarcastically, one commenter wrote, “At least we know it was genuinely earned…”
During an appearance on Logan Paul’s podcast, Kai spoke about how she has felt judged by strangers simply because she’s a member of the Trump family. “Some people don’t like me — I mean 50% of the world doesn’t like me — because of my last name,” she said on the podcast. “But like, they don’t actually know me. I’m hoping that if people actually give me a shot and not look at the last name, I won’t have any opps, but we’ll see.”
Clearly, not everyone feels sorry for her.
Numerous critics have argued that Kai, who has landed multiple sponsorships and created lots of online content, does not seem all that embarrassed by her last name, and has not distanced herself from her family in any way. While yes, people are for sure judging her more because of the family she comes from, she also has access to opportunities that most people do not.
“If I had your last name I would be embarrassed,” someone commented on Kai’s post about the golf sponsorship. Aside from that, there were many comments about her grandpa. “Tell Grandpa to stop screwing everyone over,” another commenter wrote. “Thx.”
But a few people defended Kai and questioned why people were so upset with her specifically. “Can y’all leave her alone?” one person commented in Kai’s defense. “Y’all are bullying her for her grandfather’s mistakes seriously she’s so young she can’t help who she’s related to y’all are so childish.”
