President Donald Trump’s granddaughter Kai Trump has been known to share updates about her life on social media. She has her own YouTube channel, where she frequently documents what she has been up to and gives her followers a behind-the-scenes look at some of the events she attends because of her grandpa. But prior to a recent update, she hadn’t been posting as much—which might be because of an injury and subsequent stem cell procedure.
In a recent update, Kai opened up about why she needed to undergo treatment.
Kai’s first college golf tournament did not go as planned. The 19-year-old college freshman revealed that she suffered an injury during the competition, prompting her to undergo stem cell treatment.
“I hit the ground next to the first cart path,” she explained in a video shared at the end of September. “Let’s just say there must have been some cart path underneath that ground because it was very hard. Hit it; I felt like a shock on my arm. Then on the tenth hole, I hit my driver, and I felt like I tore it again.”
Luckily, the injury was not super serious. Kai explained that she “didn’t fully tear” anything and instead experienced a “slight” injury, which meant she would not need surgery.
Ultimately, in spite of the setback, this felt like “good” news.
She clarified that she “just (experienced) a little sliver of (her) TFCC,” which is a “good” thing because it means she’s able to “get better” via stem cell treatment instead of surgery. “That’s always a blessing,” she said, explaining that her recovery would be quicker because of this treatment.
Dr. Jeff Wiegers, Chief Medical Officer for Dezawa MuseCell Innovations, also appeared in the video and explained that Kai had injured her wrist before, prior to her recent “more acute injury.”
He explained that the treatment would target the TFCC joint. In the caption, Kai wrote, “After a slight re-injury to my wrist, I knew I wanted to get back to what has been working for me. She said stem cell treatment has been “so helpful in (her recovery),” so she decided to go back when she experienced this slight injury during her first college tournament.
Reactions to this video were mixed.
A lot of the people who watched Kai’s video update simply felt sorry for her and wished her a speedy recovery. They also urged Kai to be careful as she pursues her dreams and told her that they admire her positive attitude.
At the same time, because of who Kai’s grandfather is, not everyone was so encouraging or focused on what had happened to Kai. Some commenters accused her of being a “grifter” and coming across as “self-centered.”
“The whole family is self-centered,” one commenter wrote. And, of course, some critics also focused on affordability. Someone commented, “Stem cells for a college athlete and working class Americans can’t afford healthcare.”
It’s definitely not the first time Kai has been called out for her privilege. When she announced a new brand partnership earlier this year, some critics were convinced she scored the opportunity because of her last name, not her golf skills.
