Kelly Ripa Jokes About Son Michael Experiencing ‘Extreme Poverty’ While Living On His Own

Kelly Ripa has no problem poking fun at her own family. The beloved talk show host appeared on a 2019 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! where she had some jokes about her then 22-year-old son Michael and then 18-year-old daughter Lola.

Michael had recently graduated from New York University, where Lola had just started in the fall. He then moved on to living on his own in Brooklyn and discovering all the struggles of adulting.

"I think he loves the freedom. He hates paying his own rent, and he is chronically poor," Kelly joked. "I don't think he ever really experienced extreme poverty like now."

Kelly then explained that the kids get a little Halloween gift from their grandparents, and while Michael never cared before, he's now looking forward to it. "Now that he's living on his own, he's called three times, 'Halloween envelope arrived?' … Just so he can have electricity. He's experiencing being an adult," she noted.

While her kids are enjoying their independence, she joked that them going to school in the same city that they've always called home means the nest isn't always so empty. She remembered dropping Michael off at school for his freshman year, then celebrating with husband Mark Consuelos. "We drop him off at his dorm. [Mark and I] have lunch together. We look at each other. We say, 'We did it. We have a child in college. We did it! Oh my gosh,'" she recalled. "We come home. It's about 10 minutes away. We come home, walk through the front door. He is standing in the hallway."

With Lola, things were a little different, or so she thought. "Drop her off on a Saturday. Sunday evening, our alarm trips. My daughter's having a party on the roof of our house," she reveals. "She was gone 12 hours and came home."
