It is important to surround yourself with people you trust. King Charles knows this. One of his valued advisors is Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Thompson. During Charles’ coronation, the internet couldn’t help but notice his dashing good looks. They nicknamed him “the hot equerry.” Both Buckingham Palace and Johnny were not too happy with all the public attention.
On Thursday, February 22, 2024, The Times reported that Johnny is changing roles. He will still work closely with the king but will not be in the public eye. Johnny did not like life in the limelight.
According to The Times, Johnny “remains senior equerry to the King and the Queen, in a more executive and less public-facing role.” This was because Johnny did not enjoy “the public attention he received after attending several high-profile events with the King.” He was last seen ushering the royal family into the Church of St. Mary Magdalene at Sandringham on Christmas Day.
Johnny was first spotted and admired by the internet shortly after the death of Queen Elizabeth. He accompanied Charles into Buckingham Palace. He looked dapper in a suit. The clip was posted to TikTok and has been viewed over 8.6 million times. “I saw ‘Major eye candy,’” a UK blogger quipped.

Before he worked with Charles, Johnny worked with Queen Elizabeth. He is a member of the 5th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland. In 2018 he accompanied the Queen as she reviewed the battalion at Balmoral Castle.
Johnny worked his way up the ranks. He was one of Queen Elizabeth’s senior bodyguards. When she died, Johnny was promoted to Super Equerry to King Charles. He is said to be charming and funny as well as good looking.
Johnny has been Charles’ constant companion. He was present when Charles and Camilla met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Buckingham Palace. He traveled with the royal couple to Germany on their first state trip abroad. He played an important role in the coronation, watching the pages and holding Charles’ scepter.
The internet took notice of Johnny at the coronation. One video posted to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, was viewed over 113,000 times. Johnny helped Charles change robes. One commenter thought he and Charles should change places instead.
Unfortunately for all of his admirers, Johnny might not be single. He was spotted out in February 2024 with a PR executive named Olivia Lewis. They were holding hands. He was previously married but has been separated for almost two years. It is believed that Johnny and Olivia met while he was working for Charles. The Daily Mail called the couple “well matched and very happy.”
