Kristen Welker And John Hughes Expecting Baby No. 2: ‘Extraordinary Moment’

Kristen Welker and her husband John Hughes are expecting baby number two! In an exclusive interview with People, the 47-year-old television journalist revealed that she and John will be welcoming their second child, a baby boy, in June via surrogate. "This is an extraordinary moment — there’s no doubt about that," she said.

Kristen and her husband became first-time parents in 2021, in the same month that they're currently expecting their second child. During that year, they welcomed their adorable daughter Margot Lane via surrogate.

Kristen shared that they told Margot over the holidays that she was going to become a big sister soon. "Margot has been telling her classmates that Mama and Dada are getting her a baby brother for her birthday," the Meet The Press moderator laughed. "She's very proud of the fact that her baby brother will be sleeping in her old crib, and she's even come up with a name for him: 'Lolo.'"

In order to break the news to their baby girl, the parents created a book to explain in a way the toddler could understand. They also shared that they were initially "nervous" about what her reaction would be.

"The book explained that she was going to be a big sister [but] it took a couple of weeks to get through," Kristen said. "But now, she has just been so excited and we are thrilled about that. She’ll say things like, ‘Baby brother coming tonight?’"

The NBC News employee has been an open book about her struggles with infertility. In 2021, a letter written to Margot before she was born was published by Today. "To my sweet baby girl, I am writing this just weeks before your arrival and I cannot wait until the moment I hold you for the very first time — it is all I have dreamed about for years," the letter read.

"I share this with you so that you know — from your very first breath — your special journey to this earth was nothing short of extraordinary. Your story is one that your daddy and I will always be proud of and celebrate. It is a reminder of how much we cherish you."

The letter goes on to talk about how Kristen and John both always dreamed of being parents. "When you didn’t arrive at first, we worried something might be wrong. So, we went to a doctor to ask for help. She was so smart and explained that I might need some extra help to bring you here," it read.

"Your daddy and I wanted to do whatever it took to meet you. We started a long process, called IVF, that involves almost daily visits to the doctor and required even more patience. We felt like those things were so small compared to how much we wanted to meet you."

Kristen shared that she was initially nervous to speak out about her struggle with infertility, fearing a negative response. But she got the exact opposite. "The response was overwhelming. It brought me to tears," she shared. "I can't tell you how many people reached out to say, ‘I am struggling with infertility. Here is my story.’ I have tried to be in touch with all of those people, to help them know they are not alone."
