Andy Cohen Had To Fight For The Right To Welcome Daughter Lucy To The World Via Surrogacy

Things are constantly evolving. As society moves toward a more perfect union and balance inclusive of all, it has to shed its skin or outdated laws and practices. Bravo’s Andy Cohen helped the state of New York do that and got a beautiful baby girl named Lucy out of it.

Andy opened up about his journey to fatherhood on Amanda Hirsch's podcast Not Skinny But Not Fat. He says he helped change New York’s surrogacy laws, making Lucy "one of the first" gestational surrogacies in the state. He is over the moon to be her dad and to help others experience this as well.

"I was going to Albany … [gestational] surrogacy was illegal in the state of New York until [2020] and I helped get that law passed," he revealed. "And Governor [Andrew] Cuomo, he really made it happen.” Andy wanted to make sure the former governor got credit as well.

Gestational surrogacy is when the surrogate uses an egg other than their own for fertilization. The Child-Parent Security Act passed in 2020, making this legal in New York. Surrogacy using the mother's egg had been legal since 1992, but now many more avenues to parenthood are available.

"So I went to Albany a couple of times and I was out there, you know, trying to get it passed," Andy explained. "I wanted to have the baby in New York, or I wanted my surrogate to have the baby in New York. And so Lucy was one of the first surrogate babies born here."
