In a heart-stopping incident captured on surveillance video, an 11-year-old boy in North Bergen, New Jersey, narrowly escaped a potentially catastrophic situation after being struck by an SUV while crossing the street at a designated crosswalk. The incident, marked by the boy’s resilience and the swift assistance of a community member, has sparked a search for the hit-and-run driver responsible for the alarming collision.
The chilling incident unfolded as the 11-year-old boy was diligently using the crosswalk to cross the street. In the surveillance video shared by the North Bergen Police to Inside Edition, the boy is seen being struck by an SUV that didn’t stop at the stop sign. The impact sends him to the ground, causing immediate concern for his well-being.
The boy quickly rose to his feet, gathered his scattered belongings, and hurriedly made his way off the road. A kind-hearted woman who was pushing a stroller had been walking behind the boy and witnessed the entire incident. As soon as the boy was safely out of harm's way, she rushed to his side and comforted him, making sure he was OK.
After comforting him, the mother takes his arm and walks with him across the crosswalk. Kevin Bencosme, the boy’s father, stated, “We’re just concerned and really disgusted by the fact that the driver not, at one any point, did they ever stop.” Inside Edition stated, “The boy says while he crossed, he thought the car would stop.”
Police are now looking for the driver of a newer model gray Ford Explorer with New Jersey license plates. Captain David Dowd from the North Bergen Police Department described the car, “It has tinted windows, and a slightly tinted windshield, it also had New Jersey license plates, however, they’re occluded with that dark plastic cover.”
