Little Jacob knew a life filled with constant change as he had been in the foster care system for as long as he could remember. Just when Jacob got used to one family, he would have to move and go and live with another.
All of this made Jacob become independent at a young age. By the age of 6, he could make his own breakfast and keep his room neat and tidy.
Being in his new foster family made Jacob’s self-reliance really shine, as he was the youngest one there and a lot of the older kids either didn’t like him or never paid attention to him. This made Jacob feel quite defeated.
One thing that seemed to cheer him up was watching some of the other boys celebrate their birthdays. Three of his foster brothers had celebrated their birthdays with presents and cake and this gave Jacob hope that everyone would want to celebrate his when the time came.
Even though Jacob felt hopeful about his foster home, he still had difficult days there. The older foster kids continually told him that no one would love him and that he would never have a real family.
One day, Jacob’s foster mom, Clara, caught him by himself having a tearful moment. Clara told Jacob not to listen to those boys and that he would one day be a part of a loving family.

When Jacob’s birthday came along, he raced down the stairs only to find Clara standing in the living room alone with a small homemade cake. She wished him a happy birthday, but Jacob couldn’t help but notice that it was just the two of them.
