A good haircut can be a powerful tool. It makes a person feel good about themselves. An appealing outward appearance can impact your inward confidence.
Patrick Mahomes is a talented football player even without a fly haircut, but he is not messing around this Sunday for the Super Bowl. His longtime barber, DeJuan Bonds, is traveling to Arizona on Friday to make sure Patrick and 21 of his Kansas City Chief teammates have excellent ‘dos for the big day. He considers himself to be the team’s and Patrick’s secret weapon.
DeJuan blames himself for the outcome of Super Bowl LV, when Patrick faced Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. DeJuan got COVID and could not cut the team's hair before the big game. He is not making the same mistake twice.
“When we were in the last one, since we were in COVID, they had set up a barber setup for me at the Arrowhead facility, but I caught COVID, so they couldn’t get haircuts,” DeJuan recalled. This time things will be different.
“So Pat went to the Super Bowl busted — no haircut. That’s why we lost. ’Cause he didn’t have a haircut,” DeJuan explained.
DeJuan was there for Patrick during Super Bowl LIV when he beat the San Francisco 49ers. He even got to watch the game live.
“It was just cool to know and just see my haircut on TV, in the newspaper, that kinda thing,” DeJuan recalled.
DeJuan and Patrick’s hair relationship goes way back. DeJuan has been cutting Patrick’s hair once a week since his rookie year. DeJuan operates out of his Purple Label Barbershop in Overland Park, Kansas.
Patrick gets a special cut from DeJuan. “He gets the modified Mahomes Mohawk,” DeJuan explained. It works. The last time he got a haircut was the day before the Chiefs beat the Bengals in the AFC Championship game.
For his part, Patrick appreciates and values DeJuan’s work. “DeJuan will keep me fresh. He always gives me the right cut. He’ll be in town this week and he’ll make sure that I’m clean walking into the game,” Patrick gushed.
DeJuan is excited to be a part of it all. “It don’t feel real,” he mused. “I mean, I know we got a great guy, but it don’t feel real, man. Three times in four years? It’s crazy!”
