Police officer Jack Gordon was at the end of his shift and hungry for dinner. He decided that he just couldn’t wait to get home, so he pulled over into a drive-by diner.
He went up to the takeout window and ordered two burgers, fries, and a drink. He went back to his car to begin eating when he noticed a young boy sitting on the curb across from him staring at him with a hungry look in his eyes.
“Hey, buddy! Where’s your mom? You shouldn’t be out on your own at this hour,” Jack told the boy, who looked about 7 years old.
The boy told Jack that his mom worked at the diner as a cleaner and she only came out when things wrapped up for the night.
Jack felt obliged to share his meal with the boy, so he hopped out of his vehicle and sat down on the curb to give him one of his burgers. Jack watched the boy quickly eat the first burger and then furiously devour all the fries, too.
He decided to give the kid his own untouched burger as he learned that his mother would give him home leftovers from work when they were available, but oftentimes, they went without.
The boy also told him that his dad had been in prison when he was born but had died and he never really knew him. When the child looked up at Jack and grinned, Jack felt that there was something eerily familiar about him. He decided to finally ask him what his name was.
“Jack Gordon. My mom said my dad named me after my uncle who was the coolest guy,” young Jack explained.
