In 2020 Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as working members of the British royal family. This became known as “Megxit” in the press and was a dramatic turn of events. Tensions were and still remain high among members of the family because of it.
Four years later, Prince Harry has officially changed his country of residence to the United States in a new filing with his nonprofit organization Travalyst. In July 2020, Harry and Meghan purchased a home in Montecito, California, and have been living there ever since. Harry even has a favorite In-N-Out order, which makes him practically a native Californian.
In 2023, Prince Harry and Meghan were asked to leave their royal residence in the United Kingdom. The royal family evicted them from Frogmore Cottage, which is in Windsor. The couple had lived there since right before Archie was born in 2019. They had planned to keep it as their home base while visiting the country.
In 2021, Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, and her husband Jack Brooksbank moved in. Harry and Meghan were happy to share the home with them. The royal family had other ideas. It is believed that Princess Eugenie and her family now live in Nottingham Cottage, which is on the grounds of Kensington Palace in London. Perhaps Eugenie didn't want to be in the middle of the family drama either.

The new filing, which became public knowledge on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, is with Britain's Companies House. According to Newsweek, it reads: "New Country/State Usually Resident: UNITED STATES." The filing is dated June 29, 2023, the date Buckingham Palace publicly confirmed Harry and Meghan moved out of Frogmore Cottage. This seems very intentional.
Harry and Meghan were evicted from Frogmore a couple of days after his tell-all memoir Spare was published. It sold 3.2 million copies in the first week alone. Harry painted some members of his family in unflattering light, including his stepmother Queen Camilla and brother Prince William.
In 2022, Prince Harry lost a battle to get police protection for his family while visiting the UK. During the process, he stated his love for his home country.
"The UK will always be Prince Harry's home and a country he wants his wife and children to be safe in,” Harry’s legal team stated on his behalf. “With the lack of police protection comes too great a personal risk. Prince Harry hopes that his petition — after close to two years of pleas for security in the UK — will resolve this situation."
Harry has also gushed about his love for the US. "Home for me, now, for the time being, is in the States,” he told NBC in 2022. “And it really feels that way, as well. We've been welcomed with open arms and have got such a great community up in Santa Barbara."
One can infer that part of the reason behind Harry’s seeming contradiction is safety. Frogmore Cottage was protected by a police cordon because of its proximity to Windsor Castle. His family was safe there even though his petition for a police security detail was denied because it was a secure location. Without Frogmore Cottage, they are on their own.
