On November 14, 2023, Deacon Phillippe gave TikToker Caleb Simpson a tour of his New York City apartment. It started out innocent enough, but once posted he faced criticism. One can only infer he did not expect the backlash he would receive.
Many called this NYU student out and labeled him a “nepo baby,” because he is the son of actors Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe. His apartment was a far cry from the usual cramped dorms most endure during their college years. He even has his own at-home recording studio.
Deacon’s apartment has quirky features, such as cathedral ceilings and a spiral staircase. The aspiring musician also has a collection of vintage vinyl. His kitchen contained no instant ramen noodles but did have a well-stocked fridge.
At the beginning of the video, Caleb asked Deacon how much his rent was. “West Village prices, man,” Deacon responded. One person took issue with this in the comment section.
"How much do you pay?" one person wrote. "The correct answer is: ask my mom and dad."

Others were not as harsh. One user pointed out that he chose to live with roommates but could probably afford to live by himself. Another said it is natural for parents to want to take care of their kids and they would too if they had the means.
“People act like if they had that money they wouldn’t also be setting their children up,” one user mused. “Perspective changes when living within your means changes.”
