Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been living in the United States for years — but he now lists the US as his primary residence, according to documents that were just recently made public. The royal family is reportedly surprised by the Duke of Sussex's decision. Royal expert Tom Quinn told the Mirror that "there is incredulity — no one can quite believe the fifth in line to the throne has given up being a working royal for this."
Though Harry and Meghan have been living in California since 2020, it was previously believed that it might be temporary. Now that Harry has formally listed the US as his primary residence, his move feels a bit more significant.
Tom told the Mirror that Prince Harry's official change in residence "shows that Harry is shutting the door on his life in the UK — and it may well be for good."
He went on to say that the change suggests that Harry "sees his future solely in the US with Meghan." Tom also noted that Harry has become "increasingly involved" with Meghan's new business venture, American Riviera Orchard.
Meghan is expected to sell products like jams, fragrances, stationery, yoga mats, and items for pets, as per the Daily Mail.
Tom told the Mirror that some royals are surprised Harry would give up his life in the UK "for a grubby commercial venture designed to make ordinary people think that by buying Meghan’s jams and yoga mats they can enjoy the kind of celebrity life she lives in Montecito."

Though Harry's official change in residence was just made public, the date that his residence changed was actually listed as June 2023, which is around the same time that Harry and Meghan officially "vacated" Frogmore Cottage, their residence in the UK.
