Runaway Kansas Teen Fatally Shoots Herself When Officers Try To Take Her Home

Tragedy struck in Kansas on September 16, 2023. Jaylee Chillson, a teenage runaway, fatally shot herself in front of officers and party goers when authorities attempted to return her home. She was just 14 years old.

Despite lifesaving measures, she was declared dead at the scene. Jaylee is survived by her parents, four brothers, and both sets of grandparents. She had dreams of becoming a diesel mechanic.

Jaylee was reported missing to the Cloud County Sheriff’s Office. The family member told authorities she was most likely attending a party in Aurora. A deputy responded to the outdoor field party.

This deputy found Jaylee at the party and tried to convince her to return home. As they were escorting her to the patrol car, she took out a gun and shot herself. The officer’s weapon was never drawn.

The incident is still under investigation. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will step in to help the Cloud County Sheriff’s Office to ensure an impartial review of the tragic situation takes place.

Jaylee’s family remembers her love for nature and the outdoors. She also enjoyed playing softball and riding with her dad in the semi. It is believed she killed herself because she was being bullied at school.
