People have a lot of questions after seeing what Selena Gomez’s mom posted on social media. On July 12, Selena’s mom, Mandy Teefey, took to social media to share a series of images and a caption about being a mom to Selena and her half-sister, Gracie. Without context, the post came across as pretty “messy” and dramatic to fans. It also led people to wonder whether something had happened between Selena and her mom.
Either way, though, they questioned why she would be so… public about her grievances.
In the caption, Mandy wrote about her daughters throwing her “in the trash.”
Although she referred to her daughters as her “greatest accomplishments,” the rest of the post did not exactly seem complimentary. The first image in Mandy’s slideshow was of Gracie and Selena taking a mirror selfie together. Mandy also included a screenshot of a selfie Selena took, along with various memes and graphics, including one that read, “She outgrew what drained her.” People saw this and immediately thought… yikes.
The caption didn’t help clear things up or make it seem any better to people. “My greatest accomplishments, love me or not,” Mandy wrote. “They are the coolest. I one day they will see what a bad ass I am and love me back as much as I love them. I’m just mom. Who never gives up when they throw me in the trash. I tell ya mom you’re doing it wrong, maybe so, we will see. But no matter what I got your back.”
People also noted Mandy’s song choice.
Because she also chose a song to accompany the Instagram post, but not one of Selena’s songs. Instead, she selected “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” by Taylor Swift, which a lot of people saw as an interesting choice.
And after seeing the post and noticing these details, some people immediately began speculating about Selena’s relationship with her mom. “Did something happen for her to post this?” one person on Reddit questioned, also noting that the phrasing, “When they throw me in the trash,” sounded pretty intense.
“this is so messy to bring to social media,” someone else wrote. “type of mom to go ‘oh i guess im just the worst mother in the world then.'”
Multiple people actually shared their thoughts with Mandy directly by commenting on her post. “posting about this as the parent is quite a strange choice queen 💔” one of them commented.
Mandy addressed the criticism by responding to one of the comments directly.
A few of the people who commented on the post were concerned about how it would impact Selena. They decided to warn her mom that sharing this post publicly didn’t seem great, given that her daughter exists in the public eye and rumors could start because of it.
“WTF, Mandy,” a commenter wrote. “If you’re having issues with them, you shouldn’t post this on social media. People will take it out of context and keep hating on Selena. I don’t know what’s going on, but go talk to your daughter instead of creating drama.”
Mandy responded to this, suggesting that she was just joking around when she posted it. “girl,” she wrote back. “It’s typically moms not cool joke. Calm down. lol.”
