Fans Defend Shania Twain After People Leave Mean Comments About Her Appearance

In today’s “women just can’t win” news, people are complaining that Shania Twain is trying too hard to look young, while simultaneously criticizing her for wearing “granny panties.” The 60-year-old “That Don’t Impress Me Much” singer has been opening for Harry Styles during his stadium residency at Wembley Stadium in London. An outfit she wore during a performance has gone viral on social media, and some critics have left some pretty cruel comments about the way she looks.

In the video, Shania is sporting a see-through black lace dress. Underneath, she appears to be wearing white undergarments, which some people were clearly super bothered by.

The clip shows her briefly (and just barely) lifting her dress up on one side.

Which was too much for some critics on social media, primarily because they didn’t see it as age-appropriate. “This is not how a 60 y/o woman who has real self-worth (would) behave,” one critic complained on X. Someone else accused Shania of “looking for attention.”

People also took issue with her white undergarments. One person who shared the clip wrote, “Remind me when I’m in my 60s or even now, not to pull my dress up and show my panties to millions of people.”

Meanwhile, someone else captioned it with, “MeeMaw wandered out in her brasserie and girdle again, this time at a stadium.”

In spite of all the criticism, many fans were quick to jump to Shania’s defense.

The general consensus among fans who defended Shania was that she looks great and she can do what she wants.

And so what if her undergarments are visible under her dress? In response to one of the critics, a fan wrote, “She’s Shania… She can wear whatever the hell she wants! Are we just supposed to shrivel up and die when we turned 60?” Similarly, someone else said, “No reason to start shrinking into sweaters just because you reach a certain age.”

A lot of fans thought Shania looked amazing and didn’t see why this particular outfit was such a big deal. “She looks incredible and that entire stadium is watching her,” someone commented. “Great song, too.”

“Dang she was awesome when she was young and i followed her!” another person wrote. “She is even more beautiful now!”

And while some people clearly found Shania’s outfit embarrassing, others think the hateful comments are far more problematic.

Fans struggled to understand why so many people were hating on Shania in the first place. As one person put it, “Women publicly tearing each other down hasn’t been a good look for a long time now.”

Besides, her performance didn’t harm anyone, and in the grand scheme of things, her outfit really wasn’t all that risqué or outlandish. So, some fans praised her for this performance and outfit. “Good on her. We only get one life,” someone commented. “We should live it however we want so long as we’re not hurting anyone else.”

And isn’t life already hard enough? One commenter also expressed concerns about the message this kind of criticism sends to younger generations. “It is Shania, she looks amazing and women love to scrutinize other women. Life is hard enough,” they wrote. “Unfortunately, you have to go through really hard things like Shania did to not care one bit about haters. But to our daughters who get made fun of online, we need to be better for them.”

Shania doesn’t seem concerned about what other people think of her outfit choices. During a recent interview with The Independent, she said, “I have a 60-year-old body, but I will walk on the beach in my bikini. I don’t really care if (people) are OK with it or not, right?”
