The Irish Times is reporting that singer Sinéad O’Connor has died at the age of 56. Her exact cause of death is not known at this time. Her family asks for privacy while they grieve this horrible loss.
Sinéad has long been open about her struggles with mental health. She had recently announced that she had moved back to London and was working on an album that was scheduled to be released next year. She was planning an international tour in the following years.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” her family stated.
Sinéad leaves behind three children but was a mother to four. Her son, 17-year-old Shane Lunny, died by suicide last year. She stated that she was “lost in the bardo without him.”
Sinéad experienced a difficult childhood. She was taken from her parents when she was 8 years old. Her mother was abusive even after their reunion. Sinéad found solace in her music. She recorded a four-song demo and formed the band Ton Ton Macoute to pursue her dreams.
Sinéad caught the attention of ex-U2 record head Fachtna O’Ceallaigh. They collaborated on her debut album The Lion and the Cobra, which won her a Grammy award. Her sophomore album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got put her on the international map with its track a cover of the Prince song “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
Sinéad was a wholly unique recording artist who refused to be put into any one box. She will be greatly missed by her fans and family
