Susan Lucci Opens Up About Her Health Scare & Whether Or Not She’ll Ever Date Again

Susan Lucci is opening up about her health scare and hew views on dating after losing her husband, Helmut Huber, in 2022. Helmut was 84 at the time of his death. Susan, 77, and Helmut tied the knot in 1969 when the All My Children star was in her early 20s. Although she acknowledges that "everybody's different," she told Entertainment Tonight that she "can't imagine" dating again after losing her husband.

"He always made me laugh and he was always there for me — he was a rock and very secure," she said of her late husband when speaking to the outlet.

Susan is still coping with the loss of her husband, and she doesn't think dating is part of that process for her — at least not at this time. "Never say never, but I just can't imagine [dating again]," she told Entertainment Tonight.

While "it is better to go ahead with your life," she admitted, she's also grateful that she had the opportunity to spend so many years with Helmut, she explained to the outlet.

"I know that this life is a gift, it's meant to be a gift from God and I'm never gonna thumb my nose at that — I'm grateful," she told Entertainment Tonight. "And I'm very grateful to have the love and have [had] Helmut in my life."

An offer to be on The Golden Bachelorette did not change her perspective on dating, according to the outlet. She said ABC contacted her publicist about being the lead on the show, but she turned down the opportunity because "it wasn’t for [her]."

Although she wasn't interested in being on the show, she is a big fan. Watching it is her "new addiction" and she became "instantly hooked."

During her interview with Entertainment Tonight, Susan also spoke about her health and provided an update. The actress had heart surgery in 2018 and again in 2022.

Listening to her body saved her life. She just barely avoided a widowmaker heart attack, or a full blockage of the left anterior descending artery, which is immediately life-threatening.

"Had I not gone [to the hospital], I was told the next day when I was checked out that I 99.9% would've had the widow-maker. If I had laid down, I never would have gotten up," Susan said.

This is why she is now working to raise awareness of heart health and encouraging women to listen to their bodies. She previously told Healthline that she experienced "some discomforting feelings… it felt like an elephant pressing on my chest" in 2018, but she initially ignored the symptoms.

"I thought like most women do, 'oh it’ll go away,'" she told Healthline.

"Fortunately, I listened to my body and there was someone there [her doctor] who could prod me to go to the hospital," she told Entertainment Tonight.

Now, she says she feels "very good."
