Suzanne Somers died on October 15, 2023, one day before her 77th birthday. She is survived by her husband Alan Hamel, son Bruce Somers Jr., stepchildren Stephen and Leslie Hamel, and six grandchildren. Alan opened up about her final days. He was with her until the very end.
Suzanne’s cause of death was breast cancer, which she was first diagnosed with in 2000. It returned in July. Three days before her death, Alan revealed he thought she was doing better. She had just received specialized treatment in Chicago for six weeks.
After Chicago things looked good. “She was eating and was, you know, taking her medicine,” Alan recalled. A couple of days before her death, the situation changed.
“All of a sudden she wasn’t responding and she wasn’t eating and she wasn’t taking her meds,” he said through tears. “As I know her so well I thought, ‘I wonder if I should call 911?’ And I knew that she wouldn’t want that and that she did not want to go to a hospital.”
Alan did not leave her side in the end. “I talked to her for hours, every night, and I assumed she could hear me because her lips responded. Hopefully, she was understanding what I was saying,” he recalled.

Alan shared how Suzanne died. “We were in bed together and her breathing was erratic, and I had been talking to her for hours," he stated. "There was no response except when I kissed her, she responded, and then around 5 o’clock in the morning, she was gone."
Alan is heartbroken over Suzanne’s death but draws strength from his family. “I’m just kind of shuffling along right now. Fortunately, we have a great family and they were all here,” he shared.
Suzanne and Alan first met in 1969. Alan was hosting ABC’s The Anniversary Game and Suzanne was working on the show as a prize model. Sparks flew and they were married in 1977.
