Even the healthiest people out there have allergies that cause them distress and discomfort from time to time. But this video story shared by Wonderbot that details one young woman’s allergy to air really takes things to a whole other level.
Martina Baker appears just like any other normal teenage girl. She grew up in Maine with her parents and younger brother. Her family owned a bookstore and she had always grown up feeling loved and cherished by the ones around her.
According to Inside Edition, Martina’s seemingly average life rapidly changed when she was 13 years old and started to develop hives everywhere. One day, her throat started closing up and the only thing that would help was being stabbed by an EpiPen.
The news outlet reports that after months of visiting various doctors, an immunologist was finally able to diagnose Martina with an extremely rare disorder called mast cell activation disorder or MCAS. This means that this teen is allergic to “almost everything,” including water, heat, perfumes, and cleaning products.
Inside Edition explains that if Martina experiences even a measly “whiff of cooking spray,” it can quickly send her into anaphylactic shock, and if the correct treatments aren’t swiftly administered, it could lead to death.

This rare disorder didn’t just completely change Martina’s life, but her family had to adapt as well. Whenever Martina would leave the house, she would wear a face mask for added protection. Her parents began cooking outdoors and they switched to cleaning their home with mostly vinegar solutions due to Martina’s intense allergies.
