17-Year-Old Boy Is Using TikTok To Teach Others About His Grandmother’s Holocaust Story

TikTok provides more useful information than a normal internet search sometimes. If I am stuck on something and need answers, or if I need a new recipe for dinner, TikTok is always my go-to. There is another side of TikTok that teaches more than just new recipes.

People have started using TikTok as a way of educating others about history. Inside Edition shared a video about a 17-year-old boy who started to educate TikTok users about one of the darkest times in our history.

Aaron Goodman from New Jersey has been recording videos of his 85-year-old grandmother, Tova Friedman, who survived the Holocaust. The result of Aaron's videos of his grandmother is outstanding.

Aaron said, “Since September 2021 we acquired over 75 million views worldwide from people in countries around the world. Many people haven’t even met a Jewish person or never heard of the Holocaust, which is surprising to me.”

The videos of Tova showing viewers her tattoo have gotten the biggest response. One of the posts about her tattoo has 8 million views. Talking about her tattoo, Tova said, “Even the woman who tattooed me showed me kindness. She was killed, by the way, right after she tattooed all the children. As she was tattooing me, her hands were shaking and I said to myself, this lady doesn’t want to do this.”

When Aaron was explaining his reasoning behind the many videos about his grandmother's tattoo, he said, “Auschwitz gave people the tattoo identification numbers, and people around the world, they can’t see them, so social media and TikTok is the way we kind of impart our message and show that the evidence of the Holocaust that people unrightfully deny.”

Tova Friedman wrote a memoir as well, titled The Daughter of Auschwitz. As she holds up a picture of herself from the concentration camp, Tova talks about her amazement at surviving and the fact that her whole barrack survived. Her barrack was actually taken to the gas chambers, but they were sent back for an unknown reason.

I have yet to have the experience of viewing any of these videos on TikTok, but after learning about Tova, I will definitely be looking her up and hearing about her history.
