What to Know
One of President Donald Trump’s rants from a St. Patrick’s Day speech has gone viral on social media because during it, he seems to admit how he really feels about his son Eric Trump. Listening to a clip from the speech, a lot of people struggled to figure out what Trump was even trying to say, but one line was very clear: “I don’t even like to talk to my son.“
The line came up in the middle of his rant and people on social media saw the hilarious moment as “a rare slip of honesty.” And for once, critics could actually agree with him: “I wouldn’t [want to talk to Eric] either if I were him tbh,” one person on X wrote.
The internet had a lot to say about it.

Trump was talking about the golf club he owns in Ireland, which will host the 2026 Irish Open. Based on other things he said, it was pretty clear that Trump was trying to suggest that he’s not involved in managing the family business even though he owns it. But given that his speech was hard to follow at times, people interpreted it in their own ways. Besides, it’s still not clear why he randomly said, “I don’t even like to talk to my son.”
Reacting to that comment on X, one person wrote, “Yeah, I can’t blame him there … I’d choose root canal or dinner with my mother-in-law over talking to ANY of the Trump sons.” Someone else joked, “Wait until he learns he has three of them.”
“Honestly, who DOES like to talk to [Eric]?” another critic questioned. However, others begrudgingly defended him and tried to translate for him: “‘I don’t even like to talk to my son’ because it will get me in trouble for having conflicting interests,” someone wrote in Trump’s defense.
The president went on to say that Eric is managing the family business well.

However, he allegedly does not want to hear about it. “We’re going to have the Irish Open at a property that happens to be owned by yours truly, but I have nothing to do with it,” Trump claimed during the meeting. “I own it, but I don’t even like to talk to my own son.”
He continued, “He says, ‘Dad, we’re doing great.’ I’m allowed to. I’m allowed to run it, but I don’t choose to. ‘Dad, we’re doing great.’ Eric calls up. He’s doing a good job. You like Eric? Who doesn’t like Eric? But he calls up, ‘Dad, we’re doing a great job in Ireland’…I said, ‘Don’t tell me about it. I don’t want to know about it.'”
This context obviously provided some level of clarity, but not a lot. “Jokes aside, his slurring is getting worse,” one person noticed. Someone else simply wrote, “Wtf is he saying?”
Trump also tried to say that ‘everybody’ wants him to attend the 2026 Irish Open.

And according to him, he will “try” to be there. Per the Irish Mirror, Trump claimed that Taoiseach Micheal Martin asked him to attend. “You have a tremendous golf tradition, and it was chosen for the Irish Open, which is a big deal. That’s a big event,” Trump said. “Everybody wants me to be there. You (Martin) just said, ‘I hope you’re going to go.’ We’re going to try. We are going to try. But it would be an honor. It was a great honor to be chosen.”
