What to Know
During his second term, President Donald Trump has been making a lot of changes to the White House, and people find it pretty concerning. Of course, he has boasted about his controversial White House ballroom on many occasions. He also installed plaques beneath the portraits of former presidents, and it very much sounded like he wrote them himself (White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt basically confirmed this). And now, he’s making another change that’s raising eyebrows.
Speaking of Trump’s so-called “Presidential Walk of Fame,” that’s where he’s adding black flooring.
Rep. Raskin: The Presidential Walk of Fame is just a level of immaturity that has probably never been seen in the White House before. But the revealing part of it is that he spends his time on this stuff, just like he spends his time bulldozing the East Wing of the White House… pic.twitter.com/R9Xht2bIyL

Beneath the insulting presidential biographies that Trump installed, the floor will be black instead of beige. Per The New York Post and The Independent, Trump has decided to get rid of the West Wing Colonnade’s beige pavers and is using black granite instead. Why? Apparently, the president thinks it looks better with the gold frames used for the presidential portraits.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told The New York Post that this change is “long-overdue and necessary,” but based on how people are reacting on social media, it doesn’t seem like the general public is convinced. The spokesperson referred to the White House as “the People’s House” and implied that these changes are being made to benefit everyone “for generations to come,” but critics see it as Trump doing whatever he wants to the White House as if it belongs to him personally.
NBC News White House Correspondent Monica Alba shared photos of the construction project.

“Current construction on the historic West Wing Colonnade,” Alba wrote on X. “President Trump is planning to replace the pavers with black granite, per the White House.” People had a lot to say about it, namely, “It’s not his house.”
“This is NOT his house!” one critic argued in the comments. “It belongs to all the American people and he is just visiting for a short time.” Others argued that it’s really not a “construction” project if you’re destroying things. Someone else said, “More like DESTRUCTION of the White House. Did Trump forget it belongs to the American people, not him?”
That aside, some people just hate the way it looks. While some people defended it and even said the black granite would look good, others concluded that Trump actually has “horrendous taste.” Several critics called it tacky, and someone accused Trump of making the White House “goth.”
Someone summed it up with, “He is destroying everything.”
Trump: I'm so busy that I don't have time to do this. Fighting wars and other things. But this is very important. I think it'll be the greatest ballroom anywhere in the world pic.twitter.com/tdqmA33b03

Several of the people who defended Trump acted like these White House renovations are no big deal. Maybe he just really loves to decorate, they suggested. But to many critics, the changes are a symptom of a larger problem. People are concerned about his reasoning (because is the way he’s personalizing the White House a sign that he doesn’t plan to leave?) “You don’t put this much effort into renovating a house you’re leaving in 3 years,” one person argued.
Inquiring minds would also like to know why this is a priority right now. Someone else accused Trump of “wasting money, tearing up perfectly good walkways, while we are at war and when TSA hasn’t been paid.” Another person pointed out that people are dying in the ongoing Iran war and “all the president cares about is redecorating the White House and playing golf. He is unfit to be president.”
“Meanwhile no one here can afford food or gas,” a third critic said.
