Whoopi Goldberg is questioning President Donald Trump’s priorities. On May 4, 2025, Trump took to social media, claiming the American film industry is “DYING a very fast death.” In the post, he called for “a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands.” But the actor and host thinks he should probably worry about egg prices instead.
On the May 6 episode of The View, Goldberg suggested this type of plan seemed like a way of controlling the stories people tell. She said, “You can’t do that, because what that equates to is you’re going to tell me how to write the story I want to write if it happens in Europe.”
Clearly exasperated by the proposed tariff on foreign-made films, she added, “Could you please lower the price of eggs before you start this?”
Goldberg also questioned the logistics of the plan and wondered exactly what Trump meant. Cohost Sunny Hostin told Goldberg that she doesn’t think Trump “knows what he’s talking about.” Alyssa Farah Griffin also questioned how the tariffs would actually work.
Though she admitted she was thinking mainly of TV shows, she brought up the show Emily in Paris, which change to Emily in Paris, Texas, under Trump’s plan.
“The stories will be very limited if you can only shoot here,” Griffin added.
While Goldberg was clearly upset about Trump targeting the film industry, cohost Joy Behar thought it was simply meant to be a “distraction from the fact that he’s destroying the economy.” She added, “He’s ruining everything, so look at this, not this.”
Trump shared his statement about the film tariffs after meeting with actor Jon Voight, whom Trump appointed as one of three “Hollywood ambassadors.” In a video shared on The View, Voight said he has “brought forward recommendations to the president for certain tax provisions that can help the industry.”
After Trump posted about the film tariffs, the White House stated that “no final decisions on foreign film tariffs have been made,” per The Guardian.
