A fun fact about wedding cakes is the tradition of saving part of it to eat at a later date actually came out of frugality. In the past, it was expected that one year after a couple got married, they would be welcoming their first child. The cake was supposed to be used at the baby’s baptism. Nowadays, many people forgo the tradition altogether. One Canadian woman forgot she even saved hers.
When Rochelle Marr was doing a deep clean of her freezer, she discovered a tier of her 1968 wedding cake. She was so surprised because she had forgotten all about it. She now plans to share the cake with her family.
The fruitcake was originally made by one of Rochelle’s bridesmaids' moms and has moved from freezer to freezer for 55 years. "I came across this cake that I had forgotten all about and it's been moved from different freezers along the way and so I thought I better look at it and I saw there was a date or a writing on the bottom of it," Rochelle recalled to CBC.
The date helped Rochelle realize what she had found. "Do not open until 2018,” was written on the packaging of the fruitcake. Rochelle’s original intention was to eat the cake with her husband on their 50th wedding anniversary but she forgot all about it. Sadly, Brian died in 2023.

Rochelle’s son Travis encouraged her to unwrap the cake. Together, they thawed it out to see how it held up over the years. It actually did really well. "It looks really good and it smells delicious," Rochelle shared.
A new plan was formed. Rochelle is going to enjoy the cake with her children and their families. It is a wonderful way to honor Brian, their marriage, and its legacy.
Rochelle and Travis are not worried one bit about getting sick from the cake. "I love fruitcake. I know a lot of people don't and I know a lot of people are skeptical with the aging of a fruit cake, but I did some research this morning, and the oldest one is about 161 years old," Travis explained.
Travis’ claims are backed up by science. There are many factors that make the cake safe to eat, including the high alcohol, sugar, and fat content of it. Also, it’s been in the freezer for a long, long time. But don’t worry, Rochelle is going to make it look pretty by adding some frosting as well.
