This Incredible Dad Built A “Starry Night Sky” For His Son’s Nursery

There's so much preparation that has to be done in the house before parents can welcome their new baby.

The one area of the house that parents-to-be give most of their attention to is, of course, the nursery. Many expectant parents have bonded through this preparation, and others have shared their heartwarming journeys with us.

A while ago, Imgur user MrDRC and his wife were expecting their baby boy. They decided to get rather technical when it came to decorating the nursery.

Utilizing a DIY kit with no instructions, the dad set out to work. He had to tunnel his way up through the attic and install a complex lighting system that I could never think of doing on my own.

But in the end, the results were stunning and definitely added a personal, unique touch to the room.

To map out the layout of the design, the dad used painter's tape and landscaping string to mark grids on the ceiling. This allowed him to drill the holes more evenly.

First, the insulation above the ceiling had to be uninstalled.

This proved to be rather tedious. He removed nine trash bags worth of dust and grime.

After the space was all cleaned out, it came time for construction. He bought a fiber optic lighting kit that included a light source, 600 fiber strands, a remote, and a few other accessories.

With zip ties, he clipped the fiber strand bundles at every foot before stringing them up.

Then, he placed the light source and bundles up high in the closet space.

Next it came time to install the light bundles in the attic. One of the most tiring aspects of the installation was having to pull the individual strands from the bundle and simultaneously keep the rest of the strands from tangling.

In intervals, he drilled holes through the ceiling and pulled 10 to 20 strands to the other side.

This is what it looked like when it was pretty much completed. Before completion, he had to trim down a lot of excess on the strands.

After pulling through the strands, he had to do one last step: go back into the attic, and glue every single fiber strand in place.

He sprayed the ceiling with two coats of Wagner paint and trimmed all the strands, leaving less than a quarter of an inch on each strand to stick out.

In the end, 596 stars shone brightly at night. (He broke four strands in the process — but the end result is just mesmerizing!)
