Beyoncé and her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, will be playing in the new Disney prequel to the 2019 live action Lion King as a mother and daughter. Mufasa: The Lion King is set to release on December 20, 2024. Its first trailer dropped on Monday, April 29. The 42-year-old singer will continue on in her role as Nala from the 2019 film. Twelve-year-old Blue Ivy will be the voice of the daughter of Queen Nala and King Simba, played by Donald Glover. Blue Ivy plays the role of Kiara, who last appeared in 1998’s animated The Lion King II: Simba's Pride.
Barry Jenkins is the director of the prequel, and Jeff Nathanson wrote the script. A synopsis for the film reads: “Simba, having become king of the Pride Lands, is determined for his cub to follow in his paw prints while the origins of his late father Mufasa are explored.”
Timon and Pumbaa will be voiced again by Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen. Other actors in the voiceover cast include Thandiwe Newton, Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tiffany Boone. John Kani returns as the voice of Rafiki, who narrates the story of Mufasa to the lion’s granddaughter Kiana.
