Awards are nice. It’s great to get recognized for working hard doing what you love. Award shows don’t always get it right, and many talented people don’t get the accolades they deserve. Jay-Z used his Dr. Dre Global Impact Award acceptance speech at the Grammys to call The Recording Academy out for never awarding his wife Beyoncé album of the year.
On Monday, February 5, 2024’s episode of The View the ladies talked about this powerful moment. Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin thought it was a bold but necessary move. Whoopi Goldberg was not bothered by Beyoncé’s lack of the top prize. She argued that Beyoncé is Beyoncé after all and already has 32 Grammy awards so it’s not a big deal.
Sara thought Jay-Z timed his call-out well. "I thought he did the perfect thing because this was a year where Beyoncé wasn't up for Best Album," she explained. "So what he's saying is from the outside, be aware, because progress has happened in a lot of ways. He's accepting a Global Impact Award. That is the time to say things have changed. They don't always get it right, but let's keep our eyes open. Like, that's where progress is made. And I thought it was so powerful and beautiful."
Sunny agreed with Sara. She thought what Jay-Z did was courageous. She used the example of Beyoncé’s Renaissance album, which came out in 2022 and was favored to win. She believes there is "some discrepancy there in terms of who this country decides is the pop princess.” Sunny was curious about Whoopi’s thoughts because she has actually won a Grammy herself.

For her part, Whoopi appreciates Jay-Z and her cohosts opinions but does not completely see it their way. "They're not just for one thing," she explained, meaning the awards themselves. "So for me … it doesn't matter if they give her that album [of the year]." She believes that Beyoncé’s 32 Grammys "is kind of not a terrible number."
Whoopi is in awe of Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. They are forces to be reckoned with. "So I'm not mad at anybody for anything that's happening, because we're taking these women — we're not hiding them — we're saying here's what women are doing," Whoopi continued. "And they're Black, and they're white, and they're Asian, they're Spanish. They're all kinds of stuff. So, I'm grateful." This year, women took home every major award except of course the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, which went to Jay-Z, who started the whole debate in the first place.
