All little Ralphie wanted for Christmas was a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle, fully equipped with a compass and even a sundial. Throughout the entirety of A Christmas Story, Ralphie's hopes for his Christmas wish are constantly shot down, pun intended.
When you're a little kid, getting gifts is one of the most exciting things in the world. The novelty of unwrapping gifts as an adult, while still very cheery, is a bit worn down. You may actually ask for socks, because all of yours have been eaten by the washer. Let's face it, untying the ribbon on a pair of socks as an adult versus tearing open the paper around an awesome remote control car as a kid just doesn't even begin to compare.
Ralphie cannot wait to open up his Red Ryder. It's all he can think about in the weeks leading up to Christmas, and if he doesn't get it… Well, Christmas just won't be the same.
His journey to the perfect present isn't an easy one. First, he's denied by his mother, who tells him, "You'll shoot your eye out!" Then, it's his teacher that tells his the same exact thing. He doesn't lose hope, though, because he knows that the big man up top, with the fuzzy red suit, is the one with the final say on who gets what.
When he meets him? It doesn't go exactly as he'd hoped!
