Divorce Season Is Real: Here Is Why So Many Couples Split From January To March

It's almost "divorce season." No, it's not something that was made up by lawyers to sell divorces like hot cakes. It's a very real phenomenon that happens every year, right at the start. From January to March, the number of divorces pretty much skyrocket. While 50% of couples who walk down the aisle get divorced, most of those happen during divorce season.

It's pretty weird, but there are actually some very good reasons why that happens. Dr. Ish Major appeared on an episode of The Doctors to talk about the phenomenon. He says that the spike has a lot to do with the fact that the start of the new year means a few things. First, it means you just got through the holidays in your not-so-happy marriage, which was probably pretty trying. And second, the new year is a time for reflection.

"It's the time of year when we naturally take inventory of what our last year looked like," he says. For those on the brink of divorce, chances are it wasn't so happy. So it makes a lot of sense to want something better in the new year and to take steps to make that happen.

He also says that Valentine's Day can become a tipping point for a lot of people. That's because, especially with the rise of social media, it's natural to start comparing other people's lives to your own. Seeing everyone's "happy" Valentine's Day pictures can make you yearn for something new, or better, or just true happiness.
