Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, have long expected to inherit the titles of Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh following Prince Philip's death. Both Philip and Queen Elizabeth explained in writing that they wanted the titles to pass to the pair, and many have expected King Charles to announce the titles.
A new report now indicates that King Charles is reportedly considering naming someone unexpected to the title instead, completely knocking Edward and Sophie out of contention.
The Mail on Sunday has claimed the reason Charles has not named a Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh yet is that he's considering giving the title to Princess Charlotte, the second child of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
The source told the outlet, "Discussions are under way, but the favoured outcome for the King is that this title ought to go to Princess Charlotte. It would be a fitting way to remember the Queen — who, of course, had the title Duchess of Edinburgh — and a way for His Majesty to honour the line of succession."
The title is one of the most important ones in the family, and naming Charlotte as the Duchess of Edinburgh would be an unusual step for the monarch to take. However, King Charles has been open about wanting to support a much smaller monarchy than in years past, and this could be one step toward that reality.
