Mom Shares Her Very Sad Reaction To Gender Reveal To Normalize ‘Gender Disappointment’

A mom is getting a lot of attention because of her controversial video that shows how she reacted to the gender reveal during her first pregnancy compared to her second. On TikTok, the mom, Autumn Freeman, shared a video with text overlay that read "Gender Reveal #1 vs. Gender Reveal #2." Autumn was ecstatic in the first part of her video when she found out that she was having a girl during her first pregnancy. After seeing the pink confetti, she jumped into her husband's arms and shouted "Oh my God, I’m so excited!" Her reaction to the gender reveal during her second pregnancy looked a lot different though.

Once again, the confetti was pink. It was the mom's reaction that was different. Instead of jumping and shouting in excitement, Autumn said, "I’m actually sad." She told her husband that she wanted a boy.

In a follow-up video, the mom explained that she shared both reactions because she wanted to help normalize "gender disappointment." Though many people have a preference when it comes to the sex of their baby, the mom explained in the video, those who admit to being disappointed when they find out the sex of their baby are still shamed for it.

She said she's received lots of private messages from people telling her that they felt the same way. However, she also received lots of negative comments on her video.

"I hope your second daughter doesn’t ever watch this. ," one person commented on the original video.

" I don’t understand trying to normalize gender disappointment," another person wrote. "I have two daughters and feel absolutely blessed to have to healthy happy children."

Some people who watched the video believe that gender disappointment is completely valid — but they don't think it's something that should be shared on TikTok.

"Gender disappointment is fine.. but i think this is personal tbh i dont think it's something you should publicly share…," one person wrote.

Another person hinted at how "gender disappointment" often seems a bit sexist. "I understand 'gender disappointment' but funny how it’s so often when they find out they’re having a girl…," the person wrote.

Autumn told People that she was just disappointed for about a week, and now she's excited to welcome her second baby girl. "It had nothing to do with how I feel about the baby or how much I love it or how much it's going to be loved. It was just a brief moment (of disappointment), and now it's gone," she told the outlet.
