For the September 6, 2017, issue of The Hollywood Reporter, George Clooney gave a revealing interview.
In it, he spilled all the details of his romantic proposal to wife Amal Clooney.
BuzzFeed reports that George made pasta for their special dinner (he calls himself "the cook in the family").
Instead of hiding the ring in his pocket and revealing it to Amal, George asked her to get a lighter out of a drawer so they could light a candle.
When Amal reached for the lighter, she found something else entirely: an engagement ring.
That's when George dropped down to one knee. In the background, his aunt Rosemary Clooney's music was playing. He says he "got down on my knee and did all the things you’re supposed to do. I had a playlist with my Rosemary songs on it, and I was waiting for this song, ‘Why Shouldn’t I?’ ‘Why shouldn’t I take a chance when romance passes by? / Why shouldn’t I know of love?’ It’s a really good song about why can’t I be in love?"
But Amal was so stunned at the proposal that she didn't answer right away. Instead, George says, "she just kept staring at the ring, going, ‘Oh my God.’ It was 20 minutes of me on my knee, waiting for her to say yes, because she was so shocked."
Eventually, of course Amal said yes! But I bet those 20 minutes were pretty nerve-racking for George! Imagine having to wait so long to hear an answer!
