Two months ago, an Orlando police officer was shot in the head while responding to a domestic violence call. Officer Kevin Valencia remains in intensive care and is currently in a coma. While Kevin's loved ones continue to pray for his recovery, his police colleagues are stepping up to fulfill some of his duties.
Kevin and his wife, Meghan, have two small children together. Last week, their son Kaleb, 5, attended his first day of kindergarten. Since his dad couldn't be there with him, Kaleb was escorted to school by his father's entire police squad.
Over a dozen officers escorted little Kaleb to school and were there to cheer him on as he entered his very first classroom. Together with Meghan, they walked him into school and watched from the door to make sure he settled in.
Kaleb showed up on his first day of school wearing a Batman backpack and carrying his lunch.
Kaleb's father, Officer Kevin Valencia, was shot in the head while responding to a domestic violence call. He's continuing to recover in a treatment facility in Atlanta, but he remains in a coma.
Kevin and his wife, Meghan, have two children: 5-year-old Kaleb and 10-month-old Kolton.
Last week, it was Kaleb's first day of kindergarten. Since his dad couldn't be there to send him off, Kevin's entire police squad showed up instead.
Before going inside, Kaleb high-fived the officers and showed off his Batman backpack.
Chief John Mina and over a dozen police officers walked with Kaleb into the school building.
They paused outside the school so Meghan could give Kaleb a big kiss.
After saying goodbye to his mom, Kaleb turned to enter the school.
He looked excited for his first day of school. How many kids can say that an entire police squad escorted them to kindergarten?
Meghan and Chief John watched Kaleb through the classroom window to make sure he was settling in well.
The police department posted a video about the special day, and people were very touched by the officers' actions.
"That is what family is all about," one commenter said.
Another commenter can relate to the fear and worry that goes with having a police officer in the family.
Some people were moved to tears by the police department's kind actions.
And others just wanted to send Kaleb good luck.
Most of all, commenters were praying for Kevin.
To help pay for Kevin's ongoing medical expenses, the Orlando Police Department set up a GoFundMe.
We wish all the best to Kevin and his family, and we hope for his swift recovery.
