Jada Pinkett Smith On Blending Families With Will’s Ex: ‘Sheree Was Part Of The Package’

Will Smith and Sheree Zampino were married for three years and share a son, Trey. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith married in 1997, and Jada is now admitting that there was an adjustment period as the three began blending their families.

In 2020, Will admitted on Jada's talk show that divorcing Sheree was a really difficult time for him. He explained, "With Sheree and with Trey, that was a really difficult time. Divorce was the worst thing in my adult life, divorce was the ultimate failure for me."

In the newest episode of her show, Jada sat face-to-face with Sheree and shared what her mindset was when she and Will were dating. As she put it, "Trying to have a blended family and not really having a blueprint of that. We really had to figure it out along the way."

Jada continued, "For me, it was really about maturity. Just not understanding the marital dynamic, like 'OK, the divorce papers are sent, and people are over it, and this is done.'"

As Jada soon learned, when it comes to blending a family, the work is never over. She continued, "Oh, guess what — it ain't ever done. So that was my biggest misconception, in that this woman is a part of this family. It's like not only taking on [Sheree and Will's son Trey Smith], but Sheree was coming along too as part of the package."

Jada also admitted that she wasn't the easiest person to work with. As she told Sheree, "I'm imagining it definitely took some forgiveness on your part because I can remember some times that I really crossed the line."

Some of the early issues between the two women ultimately came down to boundary issues and concerns. Sheree opened up about an instance that happened after she dropped Trey off one day. As she put it, "I literally walked in the house just to drop him off, and as soon as I walked in Jada was like, 'Listen, we gotta talk about his behavior,' and I was like, 'Go get his daddy, please.'"

She added, "Why are you talking about what happens at my house over here? This behavior was at my house."

Ultimately, the two agree that Jada always prioritized Trey and wanted the best for him. That doesn't mean things have been perfect, as there's been at least one argument in which Will had to defend his ex-wife to Jada, but they're open to apologizing and moving on as a family.

Sheree shared, "You would always say Ree, I apologize. You always owned it. Thank you for that."
