Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom just introduced the world to their beautiful baby, Daisy Dove. The couple's sweet baby was born last week. While usually celebrity moms don't make an appearance themselves (unless properly made up, covered up, and looking pretty stunning — aka, totally not postpartum), Katy just gave us a glimpse of her very postpartum-looking self. Let's just say, it's one of the most real postpartum pictures we've ever seen.
The superstar shared the picture via Instagram, and it's as eye-opening as it is empowering. Now, women who have had a baby know what a postpartum body looks like. That doesn't mean that the rest of the world is used to seeing it! That's what makes this a pretty special moment. Katy is totally letting us know that it's OK to look (and feel) postpartum. You don't have to snap right back into shape. And it's OK to embrace the hell out of the body that grew your baby.
That body is amazing and totally worth of showing off, too!
Just last week, we learned that Katy and Orlando's new baby joined the world! They both shared the happy news on Instagram. Prior to that, UNICEF, for which they are both goodwill ambassadors, shared the happy news. The stars used their special moment to promote an amazing cause, which is pretty incredible in and of itself.
"Welcome to the world, Daisy Dove Bloom! We are honoured to introduce Goodwill Ambassadors @KatyPerry and @OrlandoBloom's new bundle of joy," reads the caption. "We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter," Katy and Orlando said. The new parents then reshared the image on their own pages.
They are feeling extra blessed at the moment, and they know they're lucky to have a good birthing experience. The post continued, "But we know we're the lucky ones and not everyone can have a birthing experience as peaceful as ours was. Communities around the world are still experiencing a shortage of healthcare workers and every eleven seconds a pregnant woman or newborn dies, mostly from preventable causes."
The sentiment really hits pretty powerfully, given the moment they chose to share such an important message.
Katy Perry certainly loves to make a statement. And she's now using her postpartum moment to make another one about body positivity. The fact is, we just don't see that many postpartum bodies! Women often don't feel comfortable sharing what real postpartum looks like for so many reasons. Mainly because if we aren't seeing it on the regular, it can feel shameful.
Plus, it can feel tough to embrace a body that feels so different from the one that you're used to. It takes a while to get to know your new body. But the sad reality is that many postpartum people feel rushed into getting their pre-baby body back quickly, rather than taking the time to bask in the new baby days and just let their bodies recover, rest, and come back to a new normal in its own time.
After having a new baby, fixating on your body can be easy to do. But the idea that we need to whip ourselves back into shape can be a harmful mentality that puts added stress on women that they certainly don't need during recovery from childbirth. Recovery can be tough even in the best of circumstances — again, it's not often talked about.
Seeing images like the one Katy just shared is really eye-opening, both for those who haven't yet had a baby and those who have. Katy definitely wanted to make a point, too. The singer shared the image of herself on her Instagram story wearing a pumping bra and underwear. She added her song "Not the End of the World" to the post. "Hair n makeup by: @exhaustion," she wrote.
Having a body that feels unfamiliar to you can be tough! As a new mama, Katy probably understands that. But it can be particularly tough for those in the public eye to not feel the stress of needing to snap back into shape. It seems like Katy wants to help change the narrative a bit, and show moms — celebrity and regular moms — that a postpartum body is pretty amazing, and it's certainly nothing to be ashamed of.
There is something about seeing a new mom just totally embrace herself in this way that is so inspiring. Truthfully, Katy has always been an inspiration for the way she marches to her own beat. We can't wait to see her start more important conversations about motherhood, postpartum, and whatever else she feels called to say.
Katy couldn't be more busy at the moment. Her new album just dropped, too. She shared the news in another cheeky post that showed an image of a couple tossing a baby. "Me after feeding all day handing Daisy off to daddy bout to deliver this 2nd child #SMILEISCOMING lezzgo," she wrote on Instagram.
Katy is truly unstoppable, and we can't wait to see more from her motherhood journey.
