Kim Basinger Says Alec Baldwin Wasn’t ‘Emotionally Available’ For Their Daughter’s Anxiety

Kim Basinger is opening up about the years that followed her divorce from Alec Baldwin. The pair were married from 1993 to 2002. During an appearance on Red Table Talk with Jada Pinkett Smith, Kim explained that Alec has had a particularly challenging time discussing their daughter's anxiety.

Jada asked, "Parenting can be difficult, and Ireland having the anxiety issues that she's had, was that a difficult process with Alec, or were you guys able to kind of see eye to eye on how to handle it?"

After commenting, "Eye to eye?" Kim laughed and added, "No. No, that was not — Alec’s a funny one. We’re all fine and we all get along, whatever. But he’s been — but he’s a challenge."

She also noted that she isn't sure Alec has the capacity to talk about mental health. "We’ve had our challenges," she said. "And I don’t think Alec was emotionally or mentally available for that kind of talk. Alec, you know, operates in a very different way in his life."

Ireland also added that she and her dad suffer from the same condition: "He deals with anxiety greatly, but he's someone who grew up in a family that would suppress that as well, or tell him he's weak for feeling that way."
