King Charles Sent Personal, Handwritten Letters To Donald Trump When Joe Biden Was President

After the end of Donald Trump’s term in the White House in 2020, most of the world turned its attention to the new US President Joe Biden, believing that the tycoon’s reign was over forever. King Charles, however, continued his relationship with the former president, carefully and discreetly, through handwritten letters.

The Telegraph recalls Charles’ passion for the epistolary tradition, inherited from his mother, Queen Elizabeth, maintained during his decades as Prince of Wales and which he continued to perpetuate with Trump and his wife Melania, since the 1980s, from the day he had tea at Mar-a-Lago with the future American president.

Now — the British newspaper points out — as Trump settles into the White House for his second term, that transatlantic hand of friendship between the president, the king and, now, Prince William, could come to define the “special relationship” between Great Britain and United States for a new era. The Prince of Wales, described by Trump as a “good man,” “really very nice,” and who is doing a “fantastic job,” is destined to be called upon to play an increasingly prominent role once he becomes sovereign.

What was initially proposed as a brief meeting in Paris between President Trump and Prince William in December turned into a 40-minute closed-door meeting, with both sides praising the “warmth” shown by the other interlocutor. According to a White House source, Prince William now wields “really powerful and important” influence on the future of the “special relationship.” The timing could not have been more crucial: a left-wing Labor government, a controversial new ambassador, Lord Mandelson, and a series of blunders that American sources politely call “missteps” have strained UK-US relations in recent months.

From tariffs, to the Chagos Islands and defense spending, there has been no shortage of policy differences. The UK is “out of line” on trade policies, Trump said earlier in February. But, White House sources told the Telegraph that the president’s instinctive affection for Britain remains. And the emerging relationship with Prince William is paramount. So much so that a Whitehall source says Prince William is likely to be involved in a possible state trip to the US. All of this is probably due to the interpersonal relationships that have always been cultivated, also thanks to the epistolary tradition that has never been forgotten and still maintained today.
