Mermaids have been popular creatures in many cultures’ mythologies. Typically, they’re depicted as beautiful women with long, flowing hair, glittering fins, and a penchant for turning clamshells into perfectly fitting brassieres. No Victoria's Secret measuring-tape-toting salesladies needed for them, apparently. And due to their fins, mermaids don’t have a need for panties, either. This would explain why there is a lack of lingerie stores under the sea.
Okay. I know. I’m being silly. That’s just my imagination getting the better of me, which is precisely what the idea of mermaids has been doing to humans for centuries.
In fact, the first instance of these lovely ladies-of-the-sea swimming into our flights of fancy dates back to ancient Assyria, in which the goddess Atargatis shamefully transformed herself into a mermaid after accidentally killing her human lover. Even Christopher Columbus, a man with a national holiday for crying out loud, reported seeing mermaids while exploring the Caribbean. And in Disney’s 1989 masterpiece The Little Mermaid, many little girls, like myself, fell in love with Ariel as soon as she called a fork a dinglehopper. That’s right Ariel, you had me at banded bulbus snarfblat (aka a pipe).
So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many women — and kids — dream of being a mermaid. Well now, thanks to a school, you can learn how to swim just like one — with actual mermaid fins!
There is nothing fishy about this claim, either — this school is completely legit. Just watch the video below to see what I mean. You won’t regret it. It’s actually quite lovely in a very hypnotizing type of way. Plus, the school also helps people in an unexpected way.
