When you sign up to join the military, you're also signing up to sacrifice precious time with your family in order to serve your country. The incredible men and women who selflessly take on this job don't want to be away from their loved ones for months at a time, but they know that any homesickness they might feel doesn't compare to the safety of the civilians they protect each and every day.
Left back at home, though, those loved ones are anxiously waiting to see their sailor or soldier walk back through their door in one piece. While they wait, it's a struggle to keep thoughts of the danger or pain that person might have lurking around the corner on the opposite side of the world. Maintaining a positive outlook is essential for both parties, but that doesn't make it sting any less when you notice their missing face during milestones that pass while they're away.
Young singer Megan Adams found herself performing in what is probably the biggest milestone of her life, singing with the Poppy Girls in front of the Queen of England. The event hit close to home for Megan: her father, Billy Adams, is a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy. Unfortunately, that meant he was overseas when she was given this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Standing with the four other girls in her group, all of whom are also from military family, they sang the Regina Spektor tune, "The Call (No Need to Say Goodbye)." Their beautiful voices and emotional lyrics already had me tearing up, but I totally lost it when Megan received the sweetest surprise at the very end.
