It's been one year since Regina King's son, Ian Alexander Jr., died by suicide. Now Regina is taking some time to share beautiful yet grief-stricken words about her son.
This week, the 52-year-old actress shared a video of a beautiful orange lantern floating up into the sky. It's the first time the actress has posted to Instagram since her son's death one year ago, just a day after he turned 26. It appears Regina lit the lantern in celebration of her son on what would've been his 27th birthday.
"January 19th is Ian's Worthday," she wrote next to the video. "As we still process his physical absence, we celebrate his presence. We are all in different places on the planet…so is Ian. His spirit is the thread that connects us."
The bright orange color of the lantern was intentional, she explains in the post. "Of course orange is your favorite color," she said. "Its the fire and the calm."
"I see you in everything I breath," she continued. "My absolute favorite thing about myself is being…Regina the mother of Ian the GodKing. Continue to shine bright, my guiding light."
Last year, Regina released a statement to People about her son's death. "Our family is devastated at the deepest level by the loss of Ian. He is such a bright light who cared so deeply about the happiness of others. Our family asks for respectful consideration during this private time. Thank you."
