Meghan Markle hasn't seen the last of her dad's family just yet.
It's no secret that Meghan has been estranged from the Markles for some time, and their continued media attacks over it kind of prove her point. The Markles have been quiet in the last few months, but now they are back in a big way with Meghan's half-sister, Samantha Markle, suing Meghan over her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Samantha alleges that the interview and alleged lies told in it were designed to hurt the sales of her autobiography. She also says that Meghan's lies about her background are designed to fit a narrative and have, as a result, caused Samantha to lose out on job opportunities and to experience emotional and mental distress.
Samantha Markle is suing Meghan Markle, claiming alleged lies in Meghan's 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey have caused serious damage. Samantha claims Meghan's lies are designed to push her narrative that she grew up in "virtual poverty," according to court documents obtained by TMZ.
Samantha asserts Meghan lied about her educational background, saying that their father, Thomas Markle, paid for Meghan to go to private schools all her life. She also says that Thomas paid for Meghan's tuition at Northwestern University despite Meghan's claims she worked through college to pay her own way.
Samantha also says Meghan lied about the last time the two saw each other, saying it wasn't the years that Meghan suggested in the Oprah interview. She also says that Meghan dating Harry had no bearing on her using the last name Markle, while Meghan has said Samantha only returned to using the surname when the relationship began making headlines. In 2017 interviews Samantha sought out after the news broke, she introduced herself as Samantha Grant.
As an example of Meghan's supposed lies, Samantha cites her repeated comments that she was an only child, which she says Meghan only began asserting after she started dating Harry. Interviews back to 2012 show Meghan stating she was an only child because that was her experience growing up, between her proximity to her father's family and age difference with his children.
Samantha believes Meghan told these alleged lies so that her family "could not interfere with or contradict the false narrative and fairytale life story concocted by" her. Samantha says that Meghan's lies have cost her job opportunities; hurt the sales of her autobiography, The Diary of Princess Pushy's Sister: A Memoir, Part One</em>; and caused her emotional and mental distress.
Meghan's attorney, Michael Kump, says that the Duchess of Sussex is not quite so pressed about this lawsuit.
"This baseless and absurd lawsuit is just a continuation of a pattern of disturbing behavior," he said.
"We will give it the minimum attention necessary, which is all it deserves."
Samantha has been threatening to sue Meghan over the interview practically since it happened. Still, many are wondering why she's decided to go ahead with it now. There's also been speculation as to whether she has financial backing to do this from an outside party.
