It seems unthinkable that this could happen. A 12-year-old student at Dolbeare School in Wakefield, MA, fell out of the back of a school bus in a parking lot.
The student, Sharieff Andrews, was not wearing a seat belt when the bus driver took a sharp turn. Andrews was sitting on the aisle seat because someone had spilled apple sauce on the window seat.
"I just fell out of my seat and she accelerated, and I went through the door," Andrews told Fox 25. "I was really frightened, I was clueless about what happened."
Andrews tried to grab a hold of something as he tumbled out of the back of the bus, but there was nothing within reach. Fortunately, the cars behind immediately stopped and went to see if it was OK. Andrews was taken to the hospital, where his mother was notified.
“The vision of not being able to save your child is the biggest fear any mother has,” his mother, Latrasha Williams, said.
Williams doesn't understand why the latch of the back door was open and, most importantly, why every student isn't required to wear a seat belt.
Andrews is having a difficult time walking, but hopes to return to school soon because he doesn't want to miss anymore homework.
The family hopes that the school will take the necessary steps to create a policy that enforces seat belt usage so that this doesn't happen to another student.
