Having a houseguest can be tough. You have to deal with another person's quirks and sometimes off-putting behavior. Sometimes, it's too much to handle altogether.
One woman just took to Reddit to find out if she was justified in not wanting her sister-in-law to stay over. She wanted to know if her SIL having her period was reason enough to not let her stay.
At first glance, it sounds ludicrous! After all, menstruation is a normal function of the human body! But it's a bit more complicated than that.
Her post began, "My sister in law invited herself to my home to stay for Thanksgiving but I don’t want her sleeping at my home if she’s on her period."
Yikes, right? But there's more.
Her post continued, "A few times in the past she has come to my home and stayed while she has been on her period. Both times she slept in our guest room and ruined our sheets and mattress pads. It looked like a massacre."
Well, OK! Now we're getting somewhere. It seems like the issue is more about basic cleanliness than the simple fact that the SIL has her period.
Still, that part of the story is hard to avoid. The post continued, "To make matters worse she didn’t tell us, we had to find the disgusting sheets in our laundry and find the blood stains on the mattress pad." Eek! That's not cool.
"Not only that she has left tampons wrappers and bloody tampons in the toilet without flushing and blood on the toilet and inside of the toilet seat," she wrote.
Honestly, that's just being a terrible houseguest! Of course, the SIL didn't see it that way. When she was told she couldn't come visit when she is on her period, she became enraged.
"She cursed me out and called me a rude B$$$$ and said that’s why no one in her family likes me they only tolerate me because I’m married to her brother," the woman wrote.
Clearly, this conversation feels super personal. But Reddit commenters were pretty united on the fact that they wouldn't want someone staying in their home who acted so careless with their bodily fluids, either. Still, maybe it could've been handled a little differently.
I mean, there are about a thousand other ways to say you don't want a houseguest to stay for Thanksgiving. Couldn't this woman have thought of something less personal to bring up? I mean, shaming her for the way she handles her period is downright humiliating.
Even if the SIL was in the wrong for leaving her bloody tampons in the toilet and staining the sheets (which, clearly), a little kindness goes a long way.
Now it seems like the relationship has forever been stained, too.
