Losing a parent is immeasurably difficult. For a child, that loss is irreplaceable.
But we often find solace in the most unsuspecting places — an outpour of support from friends and family, community recognition, condolences from the many lives that loved one touched during his or her lifetime. For Tanner Brownlee, that act of kindness happened during an auction for his father’s car.
Tanner’s father Sam served as Weld County’s Sheriff's Deputy until his passing while on duty in 2010 during a pursuit, leaving behind Tanner and his brother Chase. Weld County decided to auction off his squad car in an effort to raise money for the Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) fund. The car was valued at approximately $12,000.
Tanner participated in the auction in an attempt to win his father’s vehicle, but the selling price of $60,000 exceeded his budget. But when winning bidder Steve Wells walked up to grab the keys, Tanner was astounded that Wells walked straight up to him and handed them over. Tanner, in shock, got up and embraced Wells for his act of selflessness. According to ABC, Wells declined an interview because he “did not want to take away Tanner’s moment as he got behind the wheel of his dad’s car.”
