Diving into a DIY project can be a beautiful diversion from the perils of any daily routine.
When Imgur user AKfied found himself enjoying a few weeks of free time before starting his new job, he decided to finally tackle a project he'd been wanting to embark upon for quite a while — renovating his family's dining room.
Building on a budget, this DIY-er began brainstorming what sorts of run-down items he could upcycle for this project. While noodling around with a few different concepts, he conceived a genius idea. He would make a built-in benched dining room set by repurposing old train car seat cushions.
His local train yard had all sorts of different, old Amtrak passenger seat cushions they no longer needed. So, this crafty upcycler picked up a few for cheap and got to work building the dining room set of his dreams.

Gifted with a few weeks of free time, Imgur user AKfied decided to finally finish a project he'd been waiting a long while to start — renovating his home's dining room.
He began this project as most all room renovation projects begin, with a hearty round of demolition.
In an effort to maximize both seating and storage, this builder opted for a bench dining room design.
While he knew he'd build his benches' bases out of reclaimed wood and pipe, he couldn't quite land on a low cost seat cushion solution. That is, until he ventured to his local train yard.
Amtrak was doing away with some of its old train seat cushions.
This DIY-er snatched them up, cleaned off their leather, and stitched up any tears — gifting each of these old cushions new purpose.
Once his cushions were set, this creative builder got to work constructing his bench bases.
He and his family opted for movable benches, ensuring that their dining room would remain easy to clean.
After making three fully wooden bench bases, this Imgur user decided to build another movable bench — this time with a pipe base.
Adorned with its reclaimed wooden top and train seat cushion, this bench came to life, evoking a cool, quirky, and industrial essence.
What dining room would be complete without a table?
This DIY-er used beautiful raw wood to piece his table together.
He sanded, sized, fitted, and glued this tabletop in place.
Due to the surrounding Midwestern humidity, this builder had to let his table settle a bit longer than expected.
But once his tabletop had sufficiently braved the local humidity, this maker attached it to its own set of pipe legs, nestled it in place, and presto!
This table became the awesome finishing touch to this DIY-er's new and improved dining room set.
Now, this builder and his family have enough seating for eight guests around their spacious, naturally lit dining room table — and so much more storage inside their new benches!
This DIY-er certainly made the most of his time off, building his family a gorgeous new dining room set they will likely enjoy for years and years.
