This Hidden Litter Box Is The Perfect Solution For Cat Lovers Who Live In Small Spaces

Cats are great pets for apartments or small houses because they require far less space than a dog.

As long as there's a warm bed to sleep in, cats are happy. Just ask this adorable cat who loves to take naps with his human baby brother.

Another thing that makes cats well-suited for small spaces is the fact that they know how to use a litter box from a very young age. However, finding a place to put the litter box in a tiny apartment can be challenging for their humans.

That's why an Imgur user by the name of realcoleworld came up with a brilliant DIY project that hides the litter box right in plain sight!

If you're tired of litter box smells permeating your apartment, or sweeping up the tiny flecks of litter that kitties leave behind as they exit the litter box, you're definitely going to want to give this project a try.

While trying to figure out what to do with this large wicker chest they'd been given, Imgur user "realcoleworld" and his girlfriend had a brilliant realization.

He wrote: "Because the cat's litter box isn't our most prized piece of furniture in our little 1br apartment, we decided to get rid of the old box and convert this chest into a stealthy, more appealing litter box."

The first step was to gather all the necessary supplies.

They got some 3/4" plywood, some strips of indoor/outdoor turf, a cat door, some wood glue, and some Thompson's Water Seal.

The first step was to cut the corners of the plywood to fit into the bottom of the chest.

This would act as a durable base for the litter box and prevent litter from falling through the cracks.

Then, he used a circular saw to cut a doorway into another piece of plywood.

Additional blocks of wood were glued on so it would be thick enough to hold the kitty door.

A square hole of the same shape and size was also cut into the wicker chest.

Then, the plywood was fitted inside and around the hole, while the front of the cat door was placed on the exterior.

Here's what the inside looked like once the door was mounted! Pretty snazzy, right?

Instead of glueing the artificial turf to the plywood base, realcoleworld decided to cut it into strips and attach it with Velcro.

He explains: "This allows me to remove the turf for cleaning purposes if need be."

One of the final steps was to make a small shelf inside the top of the chest where litter box tools like a scooper and trash bags could be kept for easy access.

And here's the finished product!

A small open pan litter box is placed at the end opposite of the door.

Once done using it, the artificial turf carpet helps the kitty wipe their feet so litter bits don't get tracked around the rest of the house.

The best part is that when the lid's closed, you can barely tell that it's a litter box at all.

And the lid helps keep smells to a minimum as well!

Imgur user "realcoleworld" says their cat is already getting the hang of the new setup.

We think this DIY project is an absolutely brilliant solution that creates a litter box with privacy and helps keep kitty messes under control.
