These Stunning Photos Show The Eerie Beauty Of Abandoned Places Of Worship

It's hard to believe that some of our favorite places might one day deteriorate into crumbling ruins surrounded by overgrown plants, but that's exactly what happens to some of even the most beautiful buildings. While many of us might mourn the decay of mansions or churches, German photographer Matthias Haker seeks to capture their eerie elegance. Venturing into some of the world's most stunning abandoned locations, he's snapped some incredible shots of places that have been forgotten by man and reclaimed by nature.

They might seem empty, but in reality, abandoned buildings can hide some truly amazing secrets. When this urban explorer ventured inside a deserted house, she found something she'd never forget! Haker, however, looks for places that are a bit more grandiose than ordinary homes. He's photographed everything from theaters to bathhouses. Just like these photographs taken of an abandoned "Daytime Hotel" in Milan, Haker's work gives its viewers a creepy vibe, but it also manages to show just how dazzling these historic places can still be.

Take a look at some of Haker's photographs of abandoned churches, monasteries, and synagogues, and tell us which one struck you the most. It's really something to see what can happen when time takes over the places that mankind put so much effort into building. I'd love to visit some of these stunning old buildings!

But if you want to explore this monastery — or any of the buildings in these photos — you're going to have a challenge on your hands.

You see, Haker doesn't give a lot of details about the locations he visits aside from the fact that they're 'somewhere in Europe.'

Rather than being frustrating, though, the lack of information makes these photographs even more intriguing and mysterious.
