Israeli Airport Evacuated After American Family Caught Bringing A Bomb Home As A Souvenir

A chaotic scene unfolded at an Israeli airport in April, 2022, after a terminal was evacuated because of a bomb scare.

Naturally, there were many people at Ben Gurion Airport who were shaken as an unexploded bomb was detected in the airport. People fell over and lost track of their things as they ran for their lives. Those who couldn't get out were seen cowering on the ground in footage that has since gone viral. Thankfully, everyone was ultimately safe.

The reason behind the evacuation and chaos that resulted left many people infuriated. An American family presented the shell to airport security at the luggage drop-off. The intended souvenir prompted the evacuation.

The American family was preparing to travel home. They explained to airport security that one of their kids found the artillery shell, which was revealed to be unexploded, while traveling in the Golan Heights region. They brought it to security with the intention to check it with their luggage and bring it home as a souvenir.

After they presented it, the airport evacuated the terminal. This wreaked havoc as panicked people pushed and shoved past each other to get out, while others hid.

One person was injured in the chaos as he ran on the luggage conveyor belt. The 32-year-old man was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.

"There was a lot of shouting. I just felt that I had to run for my life," he said, per Times of Israel.

Once officials determined there was no immediate threat, the evacuation of the terminal was canceled. The family was interrogated but ultimately allowed to board their flight home.

Officials will continue to investigate how they got the item past several layers of security. Ben Gurion Airport has long been considered one of the safest international travel hubs because of how thorough its security is.
