Anissa Weier, the teenager who was convicted in the stabbing of her classmate, was released from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, after four years.
The teen briefly became a household name after she and another student, Morgan Geyser, stabbed a friend of theirs 19 times and left her in the woods for dead. The stabbing was supposed to be a sacrifice for Slenderman, a fictional character that Geyser and Weier believed to be real.
All three girls were only 12 years old at the time. The case inspired a documentary, and it forced many to wonder how someone so young could commit a crime that was so coldhearted.
In 2017, Weier was sentenced to 25 years maximum in a psychiatric facility. Geyser, who has yet to be released, was sentenced to a 40-year maximum sentence at a similar facility.
Weier has a few conditional release requirements. For one, her internet access has to be monitored. She also can't leave her county, and she needs to continue with her therapy and psychological reviews. But she's able to go home.
The victim, Payton Leutner, survived the brutal attack. Her representatives aren't happy that Weier is already out of custody, as Weier left Leutner for dead just a few years ago.
Weier also reportedly needs to be monitored by a GPS, likely to make sure she doesn't travel outside her county.
Weier first petitioned for her conditional release because she said she was "sorry" and "No longer a threat to society."
